Located adjacent to the 20-story Mayo Clinic
building on a very tight, urban site, the Owner demanded that this 10-story
garage not look like one. As Project Designer, Michael Jones designed the
garage as an internal double helix to minimize user’s decision-making and
maximize traffic flow for as many as 800 cars. The reflective glass skin is
attached to outriggers and rides outboard of the slab edges, while the slab
edges and protective railings are painted to provide a contrast to the
building's skin. The reflective glass cladding becomes transparent at
night to provide greater visual security. A 400'-long pedestrian
tunnel connects the garage directly to the main Clinic building.
