Nieuwland Science Hall Expansion
University of Notre Dame
Notre Dame, Indiana

Constructed in 1954, the building’s services and layout were unable to meet current demands for teaching laboratory space. In addition, expanded programs created a need for unique research space that could not be provided within the chassis of the existing building. The site was constrained by existing buildings and an adjacent Clarke Memorial Fountain, the backdrop to which was the electrical switchgear and gas storage for the existing Nieuwland Building. The solution placed a 30,000 sq.ft. addition to the building in a narrow, single-loaded swath, outboard of a portion of the existing building, so as to visually contain the existing services, and provide a new backdrop for the Memorial. The bow-front of the building is centered on the Memorial, creating a larger footprint area for the lecture rooms contained within. New laboratories are located on each floor, including a specialized lab with unique floor loading and vibration control requirements. Within the existing building, each of the laboratories and classrooms were renovated to meet current standards and new benches and services were installed throughout.
